"Keys to the Kingdom"
The major success story in Indigenous affairs over the last generation has been the phenomenal growth in the numbers of Indigenous higher education graduates, mainly through the efforts of student support programs. How has this happened ? How did graduate numbers go from a few hundred in 1980 to 38,000 now ? The answer is 'effective Indigenous student support'.
Maria Lane wrote this key article on the subject - "The Keys to the Kingdom" - on Indigenous student support - the most important work of our time, in our view - in 1998.
It hasn't gone out of date yet: in fact, the easy work has been achieved: recruiting urban Year 12 graduates, and now the hard yards have to be done by universities' Indigenous programs.
